London, 21 September 2026: Millions of savers could soon be reunited with lost and forgotten pension pots, as the UK's pensions dashboards project reaches a major milestone next month.

On 31 October 2026, all pension schemes and providers within the legal scope of the legislation must complete their connection to the Pensions Dashboards Programme ecosystem. This milestone brings the UK a step closer to dashboards becoming available to the public, allowing savers to view most of their active and deferred pensions together in one place online for the first time; including the State Pension.

With an estimated 13 million deferred pension pots of <£1,000, worth £4 billion, across the UK, and 23 million deferred pension pots of <£10,000, worth £40 billion, PensionBee is warning that dashboards could reveal the true scale of pension fragmentation and trigger an inevitable surge in demand for consolidation.

Many of these pots have been built up by people changing jobs throughout their working lives, and taking career breaks, leaving them with pensions spread across multiple providers. Currently, finding these pensions can mean searching through old paperwork, contacting previous employers or logging into several different provider accounts.

Savers do not need to wait for dashboards to start tracking down lost pensions, however. The government's free Pension Tracing Service already lets people search an online database, or call 0800 731 0175, to find contact details for old pension providers. This route exists today, while the dashboards ecosystem is still being built out.

Pensions dashboards are designed to make finding these pots significantly easier. Once comprehensive testing and connection readiness are complete, the government's MoneyHelper Pensions Dashboard is expected to launch to the public during the financial year 2027/28. Once publicly available, savers will be able to login and view their pension information.

But finding a pension is only the first step. PensionBee believes the ability to see multiple pots in one place could prompt many savers to consider bringing their pensions together to help them manage more easily, particularly those who have accumulated several small pots over their working lives.

PensionBee has previously highlighted the risk of a mismatch between greater visibility and the ability to act on the information dashboards provide. In its response to the FCA's pension transfer consultation and through a cross-industry report co-commissioned with other direct-to-consumer personal pension providers, PensionBee has argued that faster, more modern pension transfers will be needed across the whole of industry if dashboards are to deliver their full potential and really put people in control of their retirement.

PensionBee highlights that savers do not need to wait for dashboards to reveal their pension history before engaging and taking action. Whilst the dashboard is designed to show an individual where their pots are and how much they are worth, it will not allow savers to execute transactions, nor will it tell an individual whether they should move their money. So the onus still firmly sits with the individual to make a decision.

People choose to consolidate fragmented pots for a variety of reasons, in search of simplicity and ease to help them manage, and at all different stages of their accumulation and decumulation journey. They may pick a pension provider that offers better investment options (aligning more closely with their goals and values) or better fees, or may be in search of a proposition that can serve them with a modern technology platform, and better tools, content and customer service - or a combination of these factors.

For those consolidating eligible pensions ahead of the public launch, this could mean reaching ‘dashboard day’ with a clearer picture of their retirement savings already in place, rather than discovering multiple forgotten pots and then facing the task of working out what to do with them alongside millions of others.

Lisa Picardo, Chief Business Officer UK at PensionBee, said: “The pensions dashboards connection deadline is a genuinely meaningful milestone, and the scale of the ecosystem already connected shows the infrastructure is coming together. However, there’s a difference between the system being ready and savers being ready. Anyone who logs into a dashboard for the first time and finds three, four or even more pensions they'd lost or forgotten is not going to feel empowered by that, they're going to feel like they've been handed a job to do.

“Members of the general public  don't need to wait for the dashboard to tell them what they already suspect, that their pensions are scattered across old employers. Consolidating now means one login, one fee and one clear number to check and understand - instead of trying to juggle several different accounts with retirement savings providers - so you always know what you actually have for retirement. Do it at your own pace, and you’ll meet ‘dashboard day’ already in control, knowing exactly what you’ve got and where it is.”
